Mr Muskie Charters Fishing Report

Sturgeon Season is Here
We now have Mr. Muskie III up in our Algonac location and have started our Sturgeon season. We have been out a few times now with some good success. We have boated 2 nice monster Sturgeon at 53 inches and have had many other fish caught. While some evenings have started out slower than normal the action keeps getting better and will continue as the weather and water cool down a bit. We will be featured on Michigan out of doors TV in the next few weeks doing a segment on the Sturgeon fishing.

We are also still fishing for the Muskie and have had some great success over the past week, with days of over a dozen fish caught. We had a nice 48 inches caught this week.

We will be running our charters through the end of October and still have some availability. Give us a call to set up your fall charters.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Summer Sizzle
Well the summer heat has been upon us and the Muskie season has been in full swing. We have been averaging 7 fish per trip and have caught 5 fish over the 50 inch mark in the past month. The biggest has been a 53 inch monster that weighed 34 pounds! The water temps are up and the Muskies have been on a pretty good feed lately. We have had many days with double digits of Muskie caught. The winds and weeds have made it a challenge some days but all in all it has been a great season.

The Bass fishing has been good on the Canadian side of the lake, however it seems as though they are more scattered this year as the numbers of Bass caught have been less while the size has been awesome! We have had dozens over the 4 pound mark and the biggest so far has been a new record at Mr. Muskie charters of 6 ½ pounds. The bonus of the Bass charters this year has been the abundance of perch caught during these trips.

We will start our Sturgeon charters in just over 2 weeks on September 2nd and will have both our big and small boats up in the St. Clair River.

We anticipate an awesome Sturgeon season as they have been all over the lake and river systems.

We will be running the Bass trips through the start of September and doing Muskie and Sturgeon trips through the end of October.

We still have some availability so if you want to get out for some fun fishing action now is the time to get your trips set up as the season will be coming to an end soon enough.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

The Heat Is On!

We are well into our 2016 fishing season and the heat of summer is here and so is the fishing for both our Bass and Muskie!

We have been doing very well on the Canadian side of the lake for our Bass charters and catching between 3 to 5 dozen Bass per trip. The average size has varied between 2 to 4 pounds with your occasional 5+ pounder. We have also been catching many Perch while Bass fishing, which makes for some good eating bonus fish.

The Muskie fishing has been great since the opener over a month ago. We have averaged 6+ fish boated per trip. We have caught 6 Muskies over the 50 inch mark, many of which have been over 30 pounds! Our largest to date was 54 ¼ inch Monster weighing in at 33 pounds!

We will be running Muskie and Bass trips through the end of the season and still have some open dates. We will be starting our Sturgeon trips on September 1st get those trips booked now. We also may offer Fall jigging Muskie trips in the Detroit River this September and October. If you are interested in jigging for Muskies, let us know.

We look forward to the rest of the 2016 season and hope to get everyone out to get their fishing cravings filled!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Fall Fishing
Fall is rapidly approaching and we have begun our fall fishing charters. We only have a month left in our 2015 fishing season! “Mr. Muskie Too” is still at our home port of Jefferson Beach Marina. We have both our smaller boat “River Raider” and our big boat “Mr. Muskie III” up in Algonac, MI. for our Sturgeon fishing charters. We are still running Muskie, Sturgeon and Perch trips through the end of October.

We have had some awesome days to wrap up our Bass fishing charters. The Bass aren’t as schooled up as they were in the summer, hence our numbers of fish caught were down a bit. However the quality of the Bass has been amazing. We have seen more Bass over the 5 and 6 pound mark this year than any other year. We recently boated 4 fish over 6 pounds in one charter. We also broke our biggest mark this year with a 7 pound monster Small Mouth Bass!

Muskie have been on the feed this past month. We have had some awesome days with over 10 caught per trip. We have had many double and triple headers as well. This last few weeks has been a transitional period and they will begin their fall feeding frenzy very soon!

Our Sturgeon charters have been very successful and our customers are getting hooked with battling these prehistoric river monsters!

We have so far boated 39 Sturgeon total and have caught 14 over 60 inches and set our new record at a whopping 72 inch monster that weighed over 100 pounds! We are running these trip out of both our small and big boats to accommodate all size groups and budgets.

If you haven’t yet got out to do some fall Muskie or Sturgeon fishing, now is your last chance for the 2015 Season!

Give us a call to set up your trips.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Summer Fishing
Well the heat of Summer is finally upon us and the fishing has been getting hotter just like the weather!

We have been fishing Bass on the Canadian side of the lake since their opener and have had some awesome days of catches over the 4 dozen mark. The quality of the bass has been out of this world! We have had many days with 4 and 5 pounders as a frequent occurrence and have set a new Bass record with Mr. Muskie Charters with a 7 plus pound Small Mouth Bass! This action will continue through the end of August, so if you haven’t had that hands on fish fighting with these trophy Bass. Now is the time to get your trip scheduled!

Muskie season started out a bit slower this season with days of lower than normal numbers of Muskie caught but has been picking up since the start of July. We have had many days recently of over 10 Muskies boated! We have caught 6 over the 30 pound mark and our best so far is 36 pounds that was 53 inches! This fish can be beat as there are a few more good months of Muskie fishing, so get on out with us and try to be the 2015 champ!

We have been posting many photos and videos on our Facebook page and have been using and underwater camera to get some real awesome footage of Muskie following and attacking our baits. Like us on our Facebook page and check out this awesome ground breaking technology and keep up to date with what we have been doing out on the lake.

Sturgeon fishing season is just around the corner and we will have both our “River Raider” and “Mr. Muskie III” up on the St. Clair River from September 1st through October 23rd. We can accommodate both small or larger groups for these charters. They are a great way to enjoy the end of Summer evenings and also have the experience of a lifetime catching one of these prehistoric monsters! Give us a call to set up your Sturgeon adventure this Fall.

We hope to see you soon out on our boats and the fish are waiting.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Muskie Season is Here!
Well we are swinging through the 2015 season. We have wrapped up our Walleye fishing season on the Detroit River. We had some great success as well as many days with limited catches. It was an awesome start to the season and tons of fun was had by all our customers! We found that the early part of the Walleye season produced some huge Walleyes and the fishing was best on the Michigan side of the Detroit River. When the waters started to heat up and the action swung into full speed then we found that the best fishing was on the Canadian side of the river, which was most of May. We saw less big Walleyes but many good eaters. The customers who came out for this Walleye gold rush were happy to take their share of it home to enjoy!

In May we started our Bass Charters with the early spring catch and release on the Michigan side. We have had awesome success with those trips and have averaged between 4 to 6 dozen Bass caught in our 6 hour trips! The action has been great all along the Michigan side of the lake along the shore between Metro Beach and the mouth of the Detroit River. They have been found in between 8 to 13 feet of water depending on the time of day and time of the month. These trips have been great fun for all who were out and it is the best action to take the kids out for some real fun fishing. They are able to handle these fish with little help and the fight is awesome whether it is for the kids or adults! The Bass action will continue through the start of September, so if you haven’t gotten out to experience this fun filled action, give us a call and set up your trip now.

Muskie season is opening this weekend! We will be out chasing these monsters as they are just finishing up their spawning period and should be hungry. Last year’s opening tournament produced some great fish and the largest that was caught was a whopping 37 pound Monster. We anticipate the action to be good this season and may be even better than last season, which is hard to believe! We have already caught some awesome Muskies during our Walleye season in the Detroit River. We are welcoming any of our customers to set the new season record as well as beat last season’s best, a 40 pound Monster!

We are now booking up quickly for this summer action with Bass and Muskie, so give us a call to set up your trips while we still have available dates.

We look forward to hearing from you and look forward to getting you out fishing!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Spring Swing
Well Spring is swinging into a great time to be out fishing this 2015 season!

We have been in the Detroit River since the start of April and getting our fill of the Walleye action! The Walleye season started out with many huge hens that were in their spawn phase being caught and these were all trophy fish. The action has continually picked up on both the American and Canadian sides of the river. The season has progressed and with May we have had some awesome action with many limits of Walleye caught on our trips and now the river is full of the best size of eater Walleye that you could want. If you haven’t got your piece of this spring Walleye rush now is the time as this action will not last. We will be running our Walleye trips through the end of May.

We also have both of our big boats in the water and have been out fishing for the early season Bass on the Michigan side of Lake St. Clair. The Bass action has been off or I should say “ON the hook”. We have been averaging between 4 to 6 dozen Bass caught every trip out. We have had many Bass between the 2 to 3 pound mark and have also had many over the 4 pound mark! These trips are great for people whom love that ultra-light tackle to fight fish in a hand to lip battle. It is also great for kids that love the constant action and the Bass are a great fight for everyone!

Muskie season is just around the corner and we look forward to chasing these monster predators of the lake all summer and fall.

Give us a call to set up your trips and get in on the action!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Walleye Season Is Upon Us!
Don’t miss out on the best Walleye fishing in the country! The Walleye Run only comes once a year and lasts until the end of May.

We wanted to let everyone know that our 2015 Fishing Season is officially under way! We have launched our river boat “River Raider”, which is down at Kean’s Marina on the Detroit River and ready for the spring Walleye run that is underway right now!

Spring has finally sprung and The Spring Walleye run has finally begun as they are loaded in the Detroit River system, with over 6 million of these Walleye running the river for their spring spawning, it is the best Walleye fishing in the country! The big hens are being caught often at this time and the numbers of Walleye caught are increasing daily. Limit catches of Walleye are most common on our charters but we always let those monster hens go to lay their eggs and keep this great fishery going!

Captain Keith has already been checking out some of our hot spots and looks like he is on top of his game as usual by the looks of this monster hen! He is excited to get you out fishing this Walleye season and teach you some of his skills at slaying the fish.

We have extended our Walleye trips to 5 hours for up to 4 people to increase your fun and catches. We have all new Ultralight Rods and Reels by Shimano, so you will feel everything and get the best fight out of these Walleye!

The Walleye madness only happens once a year and lasts until the end of May so the time is limited but the action is hot and heavy at times. The peak of this Walleye season will be upon us in no time at all. Don’t miss out on the best Walleye fishing in the country. Call us to reserve your charters and get in on the action!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Last Call

Well we are in the final stretch of our 2014 Fishing Season and what a season it has been. September proved to be a record month for Sturgeon fishing! We were able to boat a total of 49 Sturgeon and fished for 15 nights. The size this season has been incredible with 26 fish measuring between 60 and 69 inches! A fish with incredible power and acrobatic tendencies Sturgeon will give you a battle that you will never forget. We are running both or Regular Sturgeon and the Executive Sturgeon Charters through the end of the month.

Muskie fishing has also had its good and bad days due to the Fall weather changes. We had some days with just a few fish boated as well as some days with over 10 Muskies boated. We did notice that all the Muskies are starting their Fall feeding frenzy to bulk up before winter. The upcoming weeks should produce some real Fall trophy Muskie!

We are going to run our charters through October 30th this season. We have some availability to still get people out fishing. If you want to fill a cooler with Perch or hunt down a Fall trophy Muskie or try battling the largest prehistoric river monster the great lakes has to offer, then don’t wait, give us a call to set up your final charters for the 2014 season.

We look forward to hearing from you and getting you out this fall.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Sturgeon Charters Started

We wanted to let everyone know that we have started our Sturgeon charters in the St. Clair River and its channels. We have also added a new great upgrade to these charters by offering our clients an Executive Sturgeon Charter. We will be running Sturgeon charter from "Mr. Muskie III" our 31’ Tiara. This boat offers a lot more comforts and has the hardtop and canvas to allow people to get out of the elements a bit and warm up or take a break and have something to eat and drink at the dining table. It will allow more people to enjoy these awesome charters and let them see and experience the thrills of these great prehistoric river monsters!

We will be offering upgrades to those who have already booked Sturgeon trips as well as those who wanted to get out this season and would like the comforts of our larger boat or have more people that they would like to come and experience this awesome fishing! Please contact us and let us know if you would like to upgrade your Sturgeon Charter to our Executive Trip or if you want to set up a Sturgeon Charter, (Executive or Regular), while we still have available dates!

We have had a great start to this part of our season with excellent success! We have had an average of 4 Sturgeon boated on these trips and have had 7 Sturgeon over the 60 inch mark and one Monster Sturgeon that was a whopping 70 inch. We had one trip that landed 7 and had a triple header and boated all 3 Sturgeon!

We are pleased that we are now able to offer these new Executive Sturgeon trips for those that wanted to go but they have larger groups as well as our regular Sturgeon charters in our smaller boat “River Raider”. Now we can accommodate everyone who wants to come and experience the thrill of fighting the largest prehistoric river Monster the great Lakes has to offer!

Give us a call to set up or upgrade your trips! Click here for Executive and Regular pricing.

Capt. Kevin Backus

Switch of the Season

Well August has come and gone and left us with some great fishing days on Lake St. Clair. We have been chasing the Muskies as well as the Bass this past month and have had some great success with both species.

The Muskies have been chasing the bait around the lake and with the weather that we have had that the bait was getting blown around quite a bit. The weeds also reeked their havoc with us and making us work hard for the Muskies caught.

We have still had a 7 Muskie average caught this past month and have also had many days with double digits caught. We boated over 3 Muskie in the 30 Pound Club and welcome and congratulate those new members!

The Bass fishing charters have averaged 4 dozen per trip. We have had days with fewer numbers but the quality has been awesome. We boated many Bass over the 4 to 5 pound mark and caught 2 Small Mouth Bass over 6 pounds.

September starts the Fall fishing season and usually brings some weather changes that can be both good and bad. We expect the Muskie fishing to continue to be great as we have not had our full dose of summer yet!

We will be fishing for Muskie through the end of October and will transition to chasing the Monsters as Fall approaches (not that we ever stop hunting the trophy Muskie)!

We will be also starting our Perch trips this month as they have been starting to school up a bit. We have been catching quite a few during our Bass charters lately so the time has come to fill the freezer with fresh lake perch.

We are starting our Sturgeon charters this month as well. If you have not yet experienced the trill of battling a prehistoric River Monster, then book your Sturgeon trip now!

We hope this finds everyone well and look forward to hearing from you and getting you out fishing this Fall.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Summer’s Sizzle

We are well into the peak of the Muskie fishing season! We have had some very strange weather this summer producing a wide range of temperatures and weather patterns. These weather changes have brought many storm fronts through the area, which has made for some real interesting days of fishing. The numbers of Muskies caught have been very good for the past month or so as we have averaged 7 to 9 fish boated per trip. However even on the days with fewer fish we have noticed the quality of the Muskie has been excellent with the majority of them being over the 40 inch mark! The monster Muskies have also made their presence known in our live wells as we have boated 12 Muskies that were over the 30 pound mark and our largest of the season so far was 54½ inches and weighed 39 pounds!

The Bass fishing over the past month has also been pretty awesome. We have had many days with high numbers caught and some real quality sized Bass caught as well. The past few weeks has had some lower numbers caught but the quality and size has been great. We boated quite a few over the 5 pound mark in the past few trips and the largest was over 6 pounds!

While the Muskie and Bass fishing is still in full swing we are preparing for our Fall fishing season, which is just around the corner! We will be stopping the Bass Charters in the start of September and we will be starting up our Fall Sturgeon fishing and Perch fishing charters.

If you want to get out and fill your cooler with some jumbo Perch or would like to experience the battle of your life with a prehistoric river monster, then don’t wait as our dates are filling fast.

We will be targeting our trophy Muskie through October, so if you want to see what the fall Muskie hunts are all about come on out.

Give us a call to discuss your charters and set them up. We will be looking forward to hearing from you and getting you out fishing this fall.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Heat Is On
We are well into the 2014 fishing season and things are really heating up with the fishing. We have continued to have excellent days of Bass fishing with catches exceeding the 8 dozen mark. The Canadian Bass season has opened recently and now we are able to hit some of our favorite Bass spots on the Canadian side. We have been getting some great action since the Canadian opener and anticipate those awesome catches to continue through late August.

The Muskie season has been getting better week by week since the opener at the start of June. We have noticed the numbers of Muskie caught have increased significantly over the past 3 weeks. We have had days of over 18 Muskies boated. We have also had 5 Monster Muskie caught over the 30 pound mark and this season’s best stands at 38 pounds! This however can be beat before the end of this season as the heat of Muskie season is just upon us now and will continue to get better for the next month or two.

Mr. Muskie III is been in service for the past month and is shaping up to be an excellent fishing boat just like Mr. Muskie Too! We still have some openings on this boat throughout the rest of this season.

If you haven’t had a chance to plan and book your 2014 fishing charters don’t wait any longer. Give us a call and we will get you out to enjoy some of this excellent fishing!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

The Swing Of the Season
Well we are swinging through the 2014 season. We have wrapped up our Walleye fishing season in the Detroit River. We had some great success as well as many days with limit catches. It was an awesome start to the season and tons of fun was had by all our customers! We found that the early part of the Walleye season produced some huge Walleyes and the fishing was best on the Michigan side or the Detroit River. When the waters started to heat up and the action swung into full speed then we found that the best fishing was on the Canadian side of the river, which was most all of May. We saw less big Walleyes but many good eaters! The customers who came out for this Walleye gold rush were happy to take their share of it home to enjoy!

May we started our Bass charters with the early spring catch & release on the Michigan side. We have had awesome success with those trip and have averaged between 6-8 dozen Bass caught in our 6 hour trips! The action has been great all along the Michigan side of the lake along the shore between Metro beach and the mouth of the Detroit River. They have been between 8 to 13 feet of water depending on the time of day and time of the month. These trips have been great fun for all who were out and it is the best action to take the kids out for some real fun fishing! They are able to handle these fish with little help and the fight is awesome whether it is for the kids or adults! The Bass action will continue through the start of September, so if you haven’t gotten out to experience this fun filled action, give us a call and set up your trip now.

Muskie season has just opened this past week and we have started our Muskie charters. The opening tournament produced some great fish and the largest that was caught was a whopping 37 pound Monster. We have had both some good days and slower days. The Muskie season is just getting started and is a bit of a slower start due to the colder spring that we had. However in the coming weeks the action should be back up to speed producing the usual awesome action that we are used to seeing. It is only going to get better day by day. It is very possible that with the slower start the action may be even better than last season, which is hard to believe! We are welcoming any of our customers to set the new season record as well as beat last season’s best of 40 pound Monster!

Mr. Muskie III is now in the water and we are booking dates on it. This is opening up opportunities for the customers who have not booked dates yet to still get out fishing this season. Don’t wait long as this boat will book up quick! Give us a call to set up your trips for the 2014 season now!

We look forward to hearing from you and look forward to getting you out fishing!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

May Madness
We are now into May and our fishing season is well under way! We have been hitting the Walleyes down in the Detroit River since the start of April. The action has been getting better week by week. The monster Walleye are fewer and far between now but the numbers of Walleye being caught has increased tremendously. We have been catching many more of the good eating size between 18 and 22 inches. The Walleye catching has been accompanied by lot of small mouth Bass as well as the Silver Bass. The action during this time has been outrageous! The Walleye have been stacking up in our fishing grounds between the mouth of Lake St. Clair and the Ambassador Bridge. The action has mostly been on the Canadian side of the river for the Walleyes although some have been caught on the Michigan side as well.

We have just started our Bass Fishing Charters for this season in the start of May and the action has been great! We are catching quite a few Bass on our trips averaging between 6 to 8 dozen. The sizes range between 2 to 4 pounds. We will have a better report on the Bass fishing in the next newsletter. It seems that they have been between 7 to 10 feet along the Michigan shoreline and actively feeding while protecting their beds.

We still have some dates available for our Walleye Charters as we will run them through the start of June. We also have a some dates available for our Bass Charters during the early season catch and release on the Michigan side in May and the start of June. Don’t miss out on this great action as it will be gone before you know it, just like our available dates! Give us a call to set up your trips. We look forward to hearing from you and getting you out fishing!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

Walleye Are Running Now!
We wanted to give everyone an update on the start of our fishing season. We have put the “River Raider” in the water and have it docked at Kean’s Marina. We have been out a few times now and the action keeps getting better every day! We have had limit catches most every trip and have had some huge hen’s caught as well.

The big Walleye are heavy in the Detroit River system for their spring spawn. They have been getting caught along the entire river system from down river all the way north to the mouth of Lake St. Clair. The action has been a bit hotter and heavy down River in the past few weeks, however it has also been getting real good up river as well. They have been hitting on the Michigan side as well as the Canadian side of the river, so make sure to have both licenses. They are still tighter to the shore as they are still in their spawn phase and are looking for the optimal place and water temperature, which we have found!

The weather has been playing a bit of havoc here and there but the Walleye don’t seem to care to much, except for a few slower days the action has been getting better every trip! The peak of this Walleye action is soon to come. Don’t miss out on the best Walleye action in the country. Call us to get your trip booked and get in on some of this Walleye gold rush!

We look forward to hearing from you and want to take you out jigging the Detroit River!

The 2013 Season’s standings are as follows:
• We boated over 750 Muskies and averaged 10 fish per trip through August.
• We had 16 fish over the 30 pound mark and our seasons largest was a Monster 40 pounder that was 54 inches long. It was the largest Muskie boated in our history!
• We had 32 fish that qualified for Master Angler Awards.
• Our Bass and Bass/ Muskie Combo trips were a huge success with lots of fish caught!
• Our new Sturgeon Charters were a huge success with great results! We boated Sturgeon on all the trips and had 5 fish over the 60 inch mark. The largest was just under 70 inches and weighed over 100 pounds!

This season the Bass fishing was exceptional with days of over 100 caught. We averaged 8 dozen Bass caught per trip which was incredible. Many of the Bass were over the 4 pound mark and the largest caught was 6 pounds. Muskie fishing had many days with double digits of fish caught and many double and triple header days which made for an amazing year of fishing!

The Close of Another Great Season
Well the season has come to a close for Mr. Muskie Charters. We have pulled “Mr. Muskie Too” out for the season and plan on getting her all ready for next year.

Taking a look back at the season it was an awesome year and we have to thank all of our customers for making this season a huge success! We should also give the fish some credit for making our trips very successful by cooperating and playing the game.

The early Bass season in May was an awesome time to haul in many great Bass averaging between 3 to 4 pounds, we also had quite a few 5+ pounders. Our largest Bass of the season was over the 6 pound mark! We averaged between 6 to 8 dozen Bass caught per trip throughout our Bass season (May – September). We even had some days where we boated over 100 Bass in our 6 hour charters!

Muskie fishing this season was unbelievable and the best we have seen as far as action and Monster trophy fish. The numbers of fish did fluctuate throughout the season, mostly due to weather and cold fronts. However, we had an awesome season filled with lots of action. We averaged 10 Muskie boated per trip through August and 8 fish average over the whole fishing season. We had over 24 fish that were master angler awards. We boated 16 Monster trophy Muskies that were over the 30 pound mark as well as breaking our careers best at 40 pounds. Great job to all these anglers and welcome to our 30 Pound Club and opening a new 40 Pound Club!

The past month of Muskie fishing proved to be some great fishing with some hard fishing days as well. The weather was switching to fall, which gets the Muskies in their feeding frenzy, it also comes with a lot of high and changing winds that make the fishing tough and the areas that are fishable harder to find. We did do very well and caught some real Monsters the last month. We had 3 over 30 pounds and also set our new 40 pound record! We found the Muskies moving in closer to shore in shallower waters and feeding heavy on the shad that go back into the rivers.

Perch fishing was very good this past month as they were schooling up in some of our hot spots and had moved to the deeper water. This proved to be some great fishing and we had days with over 100 perch caught filling our customers coolers with the best eating jumbo yellow belly perch anyone could ask for! There were some days that were tough fishing perch as well with the winds and weather causing the lake to turn over making it a muddy mess, however all in all it was great fall perching!

Sturgeon Fishing, our newest charter offering was a huge success! We had a lot of interest from our customers and the ones who tried it out had a blast catching these monster prehistoric beasts. Some even came back for multiple trips as they found out just how addicting this type of charter really is! We had an average of 3 Sturgeon boated per trip along with lots of other action catching Sheepshead and Catfish while waiting for the “magic hour” to arrive.

We boated 4 monster Sturgeon over the 60 inch mark and our seasons best was just under 70 inches weighing over 100 pounds! We have really fine-tuned our techniques and found many great hot spots to make these charters an awesome experience. We found that these were the battles that took our customers hours to boat their fish of a lifetime making it a very memorable trip and getting them addicted to our newest charter offerings. We look forward to getting more of our customers out to try these awesome trips next season!

We had an awesome fishing season and again want to thank all of our customers for their support for the 2013 season! We look forward to getting you out in 2014, which we are currently booking.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

September Swing
Well the summer is now quickly changing into fall and the summer breezes are being replaced with the fall winds. This time of the season is a short but unstable switch over into the fall feeding frenzy! We have noticed that these changes can have both great days of fishing with good numbers of catches as well as slow days and some higher winds to deal with. September proved to be just that… We had many days with over 10 Muskies boated and caught 3 more trophy Monster Muskies that were over the 30 pound mark! Congrats to our new 30 pound club members on a great job at winning the battle over these monster fish.

We did have a few slower days that produced less numbers of fish but the overall quality of the fish that were caught was great! We were also limited on those days as to where we were able to fish due to the weather. Since these changes in the weather are almost over we have noticed that the fishing has picked back up for most all the days and foresee an awesome fall fishing frenzy underway. We are noticing that the Muskies are moving back into the shallower waters and starting to feed on our larger baits. This defiantly indicates that the fall fishing has come under way and are sure that it will only pick up and get better.

This fall fishing frenzy is a great time to get out fishing for the Muskies as they are going to be feeding heavy to put on their winter weight and will be hitting the baits hot and hard! We notice that this also produces the big fish in the sense that they will all be pretty fat, as well as when we catch those 50 inch fish they will have some serious weight behind them.

We are still going to be running our charters through the end of October and expect to see some great days of fall fishing. We still have some limited availability so call us to book your fall Muskie hunts now. Don’t miss out on your chance at a Monster Muskie this fall as the 40 pounder could be yours!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

September 6, 2013 - Sturgeon Fishing Charters

Mr. Muskie Charters is now going to offer Sturgeon fishing trips for September and October! We will be running these trips in the north channel and St. Clair River in our 18 foot Lund. These trips will be 4 hours in the evenings from approx. 5 – 9 p.m. They will accommodate a max of 3 people. The cost on these trips is $500.00.

These prehistoric giants are the largest fresh water fish in all the great lakes measuring up to 70 inches and weighing over 200 pounds! They can be up to 100 years old. We have a 3 to 5 fish average during these trips and have boated as many as 6 of these monsters in 1 trip. This is a true battle as well as a test of strength between the fish and the angler. Fighting these massive fish can take up to 45 minutes!

These trips will be guided by Keith who is a renowned expert in fishing for these Sturgeon and he has mastered the techniques needed to catch and land these massive prehistoric monsters. He has worked at refining his methods for fishing the Sturgeon as well as getting their seasonal movements down to a science. This will ensure you the best chance at landing one of these lake monsters which are a fish of a lifetime!

These trips are going to be very relaxing and enjoyable as they will start before the sun sets and go into night a bit too. You will be able to enjoy the evening and the sun setting. However when the Sturgeon strike be ready for hands on action as well as hands on helping boating, measuring and reviving these fish. We will be practicing Catch and Release with all of the Sturgeon as we do with the Muskies, however if you get one of these trophy fish and would like to get a mount done we will get all the data and pictures for you to get a fiberglass replica. You can expect to have some hands on time viewing and handling these fish as we have made a special XL live well for the Sturgeon to revive before taking your pictures and being released back into the water.

Give us a call to discuss the trip details and answer any questions you may have. We are booking these trips now so call us to set up your Sturgeon fishing adventure as dates and availability are limited! Don’t miss out on your fish of a lifetime!

Capt. Kevin Backus

September 5, 2013

Well August is now past and it was a great month of fishing action. There were a lot of swinging weather patterns that had brought some tougher fishing days, however we boated fish in all these adverse conditions.

We went through some days of 90 degree temps and nice breezes out of the south and then sudden cold fronts with north winds that limited our areas of fishing. During this month we still had a higher than average number of fish boated… around 8 to 10 Muskies per trip! We started the month still fishing the deeper water in the middle of the lake however as the month went on and the weather patterns changed we also had to change our fishing locations as well as our tactics for catching the Muskies. We have been working the south shore of the lake from 12 to 15 feet of water trying to find nice water color and little or no weeds for the best fishing conditions.

We boated 3 to 4 fish over the 50 inch and 30 pound mark this past month and want to congratulate all of our new 30 pound club members! Great job catching these monsters and releasing them back so they can get even bigger and be caught another day.

The Bass fishing during the past month proved to be some good action with our average catch of 4 to 5 dozen per trip. We also notice a good amount of Perch being caught during these trips which is a good sign that they are starting to school for the fall bite.

We will be ending our Bass Trips as well as our Sunset Cruises this month, We will be starting our Perch Charters as well as our Sturgeon Trips. We will still be catching the Muskies and hunting them down during their fall feeding frenzy through October!

We are now booking the rest of this season as well as 2014. Give us a call to set up your charters!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

August 10, 2013

July has proved to be an awesome month of fishing with only a few bad weather days that made things difficult. We have seen many days of over 10 fish boated and our best day we boated 20 Muskies! There were many Monster Muskies caught this month as we boated 7 fish over 50 inches and 30 pound mark as well as a 37 pound Monster. That is our top fish of the season so far.

This month there was the big Muskie tournament with over 48 boats and there was a great turn out. There was an estimated 170 fish over the 50 inch mark caught that weekend alone and the largest that won the tournament at 55 inches! That just goes to show how awesome Lake St. Clair is for Muskie fishing and that it is the best Muskie fishery in the world!

We have been fishing the south shore of the lake as well as out deep in the middle of the lake for the past month or so and have noticed mostly all good quality fish with an average size of 40 inches! Those are the best fighting size Muskies to catch as they will battle with you like crazy!

We have noticed a lot of the floating weeds which has made for some tough fishing and work keeping the lines clean as well as limiting the areas that we can fish. However sometimes the work pays off with an awesome day of catching! This has also made us wander to different areas and have found nice packs of fish in many places around the lake!

The Bass fishing has been very productive this past month with an average of 5-6 dozen caught on every trip. Most of the Bass fishing has been on the Canadian side of the lake and we have been fishing in 14 to 18 inches of water. They have varied in size with most in the 3-4 pound range. We caught some over the 5 pound mark and the largest of the season is just over 6 pounds! That is a trophy Bass by anyone’s standards! That is why Lake St. Clair is the best Bass fishing lake in the country!

We have posted a lot of new videos, testimonials and articles to the website so make sure to check them out. We are now booking our Fall Fishing for Muskies and some Perch fishing. If you haven’t set your trip up call us now before we are all booked for this season. We are now taking reservations for 2014 so call us to set up your charters now and get a date during the peak of the season! The fishing is great and keeps getting better so don’t miss out on an awesome day on the best lake with family, friends or clients.

Capt. Kevin Backus

July 5, 2013

June started the Muskie season off in a non-typical manner. The opening tournament was won with a larger than normal Muskie weighing in at 37½ lbs. One week or so after the opener there was a Muskie at 45.6 lbs. These large of fish caught this early in the season is like nothing we have seen in the past. This could be the sign that there will be some record breaking fish caught this year and possibly a new state or world record!

The weather in June was also not as it usually would be, with a lot of very cool days, cold fronts and some good late spring rain showers. The water temps also had a hard time making it out of the 60 degree range. This in turn produced many hard days of fishing with some low number days of fish caught, however we did have some nice weather days and many fish were caught with our best day of 13 for 17. We also caught some real trophy fish with 4 over the 30 lb. mark and 1 over the 35 lb. mark caught by a 12 year old boy, see the website to check out the video!

Now July has finally come along and it has brought the warm summer temperatures which have warmed the water temps up in the 70’s and the fast and furious fishing has begun. We have noticed that the numbers of fish caught have increased and we suspect that it will just get better with the summer weather. The fish have started to move a bit out into deeper water and we are now finding them in the 12 to 14 ft. range. The action is more of the typical summer action with the number of fish caught around 10 fish boated!

The Bass season has been open in Canada for a few weeks now as it also has been under way in Michigan water for weeks now. We have been averaging 50-75 Bass caught every trip with an average weight of 3 to 4 lbs. and an occasional 5+ pounder! We have been averaging about 5 dozen per trip!

I think that the weather and the rise in the water is a good heading into an excellent fishing season. We still have some availability during the 2013 season and will be offering Bass through September and Muskie through October. We will also take people out Perch fishing in mid September thru October.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

June 24, 2013

Summer is officially here and the temps are heating up and so is the Muskie fishing!

We have noticed that what started out with a bit slower than normal action and numbers of fish caught has quickly turned around like the temperatures have. We went from boating an average of 4 – 6 fish to now 8- 12 fish boated per trip! We have had over 10 caught the past few days. We have also caught a few real monster Muskies recently… one of which was landed by a 14 year old boy who managed to land a 50 inch Monster Muskie that weighed 36 pounds!

We have been fishing the south end of the lake in Canadian waters and have found the action to be best between the Detroit River and Belle River so far.

This crazy Muskie frenzy is only going to get better and with the average size being 36 inches they are great fighters that will give you a run for your money!

The Monster Muskies are being caught from time to time however they seem to be much bigger than usual for this time of the season.

This is the time to get out and start fishing so get out and give it a try!

Tight Lines,

Capt. Kevin Backus

June 17, 2013

The Muskie season is starting to heat up as they have been hitting well the last few days! Last week a record Muskie was caught in the lake by Keith Jones, who boated a 45 pound Muskie!

We have been battling against the cold fronts and storms with plenty of rain, which was slowing down the bite. However the last few days have produced some great catches of 7-10 fish boated per trip! We have been fishing both the Michigan side of the lake as well as the south Canadian shoreline. We expect that with this weather stabilizing that we will see far better action than how the season started. The water temps are coming up and the summer weather is here.

The Bass fishing has still been pretty hot on the Michigan side of the lake. We are still working from the Grosse pointes to the Metro beach areas from 10 to 13 feet of water. We are finding that live bait is what they want however some days we have done well on plastics.

We are also getting into some silver Bass which have fled the river and come into the main lake. They are a lot of fun to catch and some say not bad eating.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Kevin Backus

June 9, 2013

Muskie Season kicked off last weekend with a bang! The MOMC held their opening tournament and most anglers had good success fishing different areas around the lake. The winner of the tournament caught a 37.6 pound Muskie that was 52 inches long! We had some good success with our fist Muskie boated was 48 inches. We ended up 3 for 5 and fished the dumping grounds area. This is the start to a great season with huge fish like this being caught the door is wide open for many trophy Muskie and a possible new lake record!

The Bass fishing continues to be excellent as we have been catching 5-7 dozen bass each trip. Most days you can expect to get some other species like Rock Bass, Sheephead and Silver Bass as they have entered the lake as well and are filling up the Detroit River. The action has been very good around the mile roads in 8-12 foot of water using live bait has worked the best.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

May 28, 2013

We were correct with the speculation that the Bass fishing was going to get better. The weather has heated up and so has the Bass action. We have been fishing the Michigan catch and release season. We have been working the mile roads as well as the Grosse Pointe areas and have been seeing a huge increase in our catches. We have been averaging 5 to 6 dozen bass per trip plus quite a few incidental other species caught. Muskie season opens this weekend and we are anticipating a great start to the season. We even saw a Muskie close to 50 inches long swim next to the boat while we were Bass fishing. The Muskies are hungry and so are all the Muskie fisherman! We will keep you posted on the Muskie season as it unfolds.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin Backus

May 13, 2013

To all our customers and fans:

Michigan Law Changes
We wanted to give you a update to some new regulations for fishing Muskie in Michigan waters. The D.N.R. has now implemented a new Muskie tag that is needed to keep a Muskie. I know we practice catch and release but we may encounter a Muskie that dies or we may have it in the live well and they could say that it was in our possession. So the thing to do is obtain a Muskie tag, which are free when you purchase your Michigan licenses. It is also necessary to have both the license and tag in your possession on all fishing trips!

Canada Law Changes
Canada has a new policy that they have implemented to protect their boarders. They have made it so everyone has to check in with their boarder agency C.B.S.A., whether it is a personal trip or on a charter. This would be the same process as if you were crossing their boarder by land, only we are able to do it over the phone.

We will be calling in on all our trips into Canadian waters! We will have a daily manifest with everyone’s name and birthdate, before we leave the dock. I will handle all the calls and deal with the boarder security issues. This being said everyone will need some picture ID along with some proof of citizenship. We should have no problems or delays due to the calling in to the C.B.S.A. However Canada has different laws than we do, which is where a problem may occur.

They will NOT allow anyone into their country that has been convicted of a felony. Canada considers any drunk driving offences as a felony, however that may be over looked due to number of offences and time lapsed from the offence. It is at the discretion of the officer on the phone. They have restated the law to allow lenience to the drinking offences due to the number of people who had them, so they have left it up to the officer taking the call. Now this will only affect our charters to the extent of fishing in Canada. We don’t anticipate any issues, however if it is found that one of the guests on the charter is NOT allowed in Canada, we can still do our charter and will fish in Michigan waters. The fees for the Canadian licenses purchased will not be refundable. We will not cancel nor reschedule any charters due to the denial of entry into Canada.

This law has been in effect for many years but just recently has been enforced with stringent penalties for noncompliance. We have also found that it is a simple and easy process that is not intended to inhibit any fisherman but only to protect their boarders from illegals and from terrorists.

Fishing Report
Bass: On a much happier note we have officially started our 2013 fishing season with the Michigan early catch and release season for Bass. We have been out a few times with great success! We caught 4 dozen on one trip and 6 dozen on the other. We had 6 fish over the 5 pound mark so far. We believe that the action is just getting going with the cold spring the Bass are just getting on their beds and getting ready to spawn. We should start to see the higher numbers of bass caught up to 8 dozen, which was our 2012 average! We still have open dates for this early season and will be fishing the Bass through the start of September.

Muskies: The Muskie season will open on June 1st. We are anticipating an awesome fishing season for the Muskies! The new world record was caught last year in Michigan and with Lake St. Clair as the Muskie capital of the world anything is possible! We still have limited availability during the peak of the season but do have dates from June – November. Give us a call ASAP to set up your fishing trips while dates are still available.

If you have any questions or concerns with your charter that has been booked feel free to give us a call.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope to get you out fishing this season!

Capt. Kevin Backus

May 4, 2013

The Walleye season has been very hot with some great action and quick limits. The action has been much better between Peche Island and the Ambassador Bridge. The weather has been dictating where it will be fishable. The sizes have come down just a bit with 5-7 pounders being the average, while still a 9 or 10 pound being caught as well.

Bass Season has opened for catch and release this past week and with the cold spring they are all up on their beds. There have been some real dandies caught but that action is going to soar. With the cold winter and spring these conditions should produce one of the best Bass fishing seasons in a long time. We expect the action to continue to be excellent with numerous 3-4 pounders and an occasional Lake St. Clair Monster! We still have spring dates available for our Bass charters so give us a call to set up your trip.

Capt. Kevin Backus

Well winter has finally made it’s exit and spring has sprung. The ice has all melted and the boats are being launched every day! This time of year gets everyone excited about boating and fishing. It also marks the start of the fishing season!

The Walleye run is now well under way in the Detroit River system, with over 2 million Walleye running through and spawning, this is the time of year to fish for them! Vertical jigging is the preferred method and is very productive using plastics.

This time of year usually produces monster Walleye and this year has been one of the best ever with huge Walleye being caught. The largest reported was over 16 pounds, which is unheard of for that species! This past weekend the MOMC held their annual Walleye tournament, which had great results. The winning teams biggest 5 fish weighted 48.6 pounds!

The majority of the best action has been south of the Ambassador Bridge from the middle of the river to Lake Erie, however there have been a lot more fish being caught in the upper section of the river between the Ambassador Bridge and the mouth of Lake St. Clair.

The water temps are coming up and the water clarity will make the next 4 to 6 weeks the best Walleye fishing in the Detroit River system. It will also produce good numbers of fish and the monsters will become fewer.

We are still offering a pre-season discount on all charters booked.

The cold spring will also make this one of the best Bass fishing seasons in many years! We expect to have even better numbers as well as larger Bass caught, which is hard to believe. Last year we averaged 100 Bass caught and a lot of them were in the 4-5 pound range!

We will be starting our Bass charters the first week of May. We still have openings for our pre-season catch and release in May (Michigan Waters Only). These are great charters with lots of action for the full charter time. There are no Canadian licenses or fuel surcharges!

Muskie season is only 6 weeks away and we are expecting an awesome year of fishing. Everyone is on the hunt for the next state and new world record, it could be you who catches it. We are booking up fast during the prime Muskie fishing season, so if you haven’t set up your trips yet do so soon, so you get your chance at the monsters of Lake St. Clair!

We are still running our pre-season discounts through the end of the month, so make sure to give us a call and set your charters up while you can still get the discount!

We look forward to hearing from you and hope to get you out fishing this season!

Swinging into Fall

Well the sizzling hot summer of Muskie fishing is starting to change as the weather changes into fall. We had an awesome August as well as a great start to September. We had great days with good numbers of fish boated as well as 3 trophy Muskie over the 30lb. mark! We do anticipate a bit of a slowdown in the action during the change from summer to fall but with the numbers and quality of fish still being boated the fall has some great potential for some fat trophy Muskie to come! This should be a great time as all the numbers of fish that we have been catching all summer will be fattening up for winter, so the action should be good with the possibility of a monster Muskie all the time!

We have also noticed on the last few of our Bass/Muskie Combo trips that we have been catching a good number of Perch at the same time, which lets us know that they are in the process of getting into their large schools again for the fall. This should be a great season to fill some buckets with Lake St. Clair jumbo yellow belly Perch, which are the best eating fish in fresh water!

We will be running trips for Muskie & Perch through the end of October. We still have some limited availability in the end of September as well as during October. If you are interested in hunting down some monster Muskies this fall or just want to fill the freezer with some fresh Perch give us a call to set up your trips now. The season will be over soon so don’t wait and miss out on some great fishing with your friends, family or clients!

We look forward to hearing from you and hope to get you out fishing soon!

The Heat is on…

Yes the 2012 Fishing Season is in full swing and the action has been as hot as the weather lately! We have been averaging 10 - 12 Muskies per trip and have even had days where over 24 Muskies in one trip were boated! We boated 5 Muskies over the 50 in. mark and 4 over the 30 lb. mark with the largest to beat at 36.6 lbs. However, the lake and heat has turned the Monster Muskies on as there have been 2 Muskies over the 40 lbs. mark boated and released back into the lake to be caught again. The action should hold good for a while and we still have some availability for August thru October.

The Bass fishing has still been awesome with 7-9 dozen fish boated average per trip. We have seen a good number of larger bass this season with many over the 4 & 5 lb. mark. The biggest Bass so far this season was 6.5 lbs. and was 22 inches! Now that is a monster Bass! The Bass fishing should continue to be good through the start to mid September.

The Perch have been starting to biting already as we have caught 25 on our Bass Charters. We will be starting our Perch trips mid September thru October. We will be offering trophy hunts during October for those who just want to get a big Muskie and are not as concerned with numbers.

Give us a call to set up your summer or fall trips now while we still have dates available!

We look forward to hearing from you soon and hope to get you out fishing this season as the fishing is great!

We are well into both Bass and Muskie fishing for the 2012 Season and what an awesome fishing season it is turning out to be.

We just started fishing Bass on both the Canadian and Michigan sides. The Michigan side over the past 2 months for the early catch and release season was incredible fishing. We have a running average of 8 to 9 dozen Bass caught per 6 hour trip!

Our best day of Bass fishing so far has been over 100 Bass boated and the largest fish of this season was 6.6 lbs. that measured 22 inches! Now that is some great Bass fishing. The Bass fishing is getting better as the summer heats up and now we can fish the Canadian side where they have been left alone so far and that will make some awesome fishing.

The Muskie Season is also well under way with the season’s opening tournament bringing in a 40 lb. fish, there have been many fish caught over the 30 lb. mark so far. This season has shown to be one of the best Muskie fishing season’s yet as we have been boating over 10 fish per trip! That is a running average of 10 Muskie boated with our best day so far of 21 to 28 Muskies. We have had many double and triple headers too. The biggest Muskie boated so far was 52 inches and weighed 34 lbs. This fishing season should bring in many more monsters as well as a possible 50 pounder before the seasons end.

The best part of the Muskie season is just getting started as well as the Canadian Bass season. We still have some dates available during the peak of this fishing season and this is not a season to miss! Give us a call and set up your Bass or Muskie trips while there is still time.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope to get you out fishing this season!

Now as May sets in and the temps have been steadily climbing along with the water temps, so too has the fishing…

The Walleye fishing in the Detroit river has been outstanding this season with many big fish and limits of Walleyes caught in very short order at times. Recently there has been an abundance of silver bass being caught as well. These fish are a riot to catch as they are more than plentiful when in the river. They will school up to chase & eat bait, therefore when you are trying to get your jig down to the walleye’s they will hit it before it gets to the bottom. It makes it harder to catch the Walleye but you can’t beat the action of the silver bass run!

It seems there has been a lot of Muskies being caught while jigging in the river as well as in the lake during the catch & release Bass season… This should prove to be an awesome year for Muskie fishing and there should be some real monsters caught this year, just like the one that is shown on our Facebook page that was caught by our mate Keith while he was fishing Walleye’s. It was 48” x 26” weighing a massive 40.6 lbs!! That is a true Monster Muskie. Check it out on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MrMuskieCharters and join “like” our page to keep up with what is going on between fishing reports!

The early catch & release season for Bass has proved to be very successful as we have averaged 3-5 dozen caught every trip… Now that is some good action! We just started those charters last week and will be doing the Bass charters through September however the action is best during the earlier part of the season.

We will keep everyone posted on the fishing and add some pictures to keep you drooling… Give us a call to set up your 2012 charters while some dates are still available during the peak of the fishing season!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin

With the mild winter we had and the jump start into spring with record temps this fishing season is off and running with warmer than usual water temps and active fish. We should expect a great fishing season for the 2012!

Walleye season has already begun in the Detroit River! There have been days with some good action and limits of Walleye have been caught already! They are being caught over a wide spread area both on the American side as well as the Canadian side.

Bass season should be starting with some great action as they have been very active in the canals and shallows which means they are starting their mating and spawning cycle. This should make them active and hungry for the early catch and release season. We will be starting our Bass charters the 1st of May!

Muskie season is just around the corner and our charters are starting to fill up as are the Muskies on the small bait fish in the shallows. There have been many sightings of huge Muskies in the shallows which indicates they are spawning and feeding while protecting their eggs. There was very little die off this winter and a huge number of Muskies caught last season just under the legal mark, which means this should be another unbelievable year for Muskie fishing! I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the year of the 50 pounder!! Our calendar is starting to get filled up during the peak of the Muskie season, so call us to set up your 2012 charters while prime dates may still be available.

We look forward to hearing from everyone and hope to get you out fishing this season!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Kevin
